原先預料小熊艾瑞耶塔、巨人「瘋龐」龐加納王牌對決的投手戰，11日國聯分區系列賽第3戰卻意外形成打擊戰。毫無退路的巨人隊緊抓最後一絲希望，大半場落後的情況下鯨吞蠶食，13局下潘尼克以再見安率隊6比5免於橫掃命運，巨人偶數年封王神話還有得瞧。
系列戰陷入0比2絕對落後的巨人隊，此役推出僅休3天的王牌龐加納，未料2局上「瘋龐」先是投出觸身球又挨安打，2出局後小熊強投艾瑞耶塔更一展強投豪打本色，一棒將球轟上左外野看台，成為史上第1位自龐加納手中開轟投手，同時終止「瘋龐」季後賽連續24局無失分紀錄。
巨人隊3、5局各添1分，8局下再逆襲，即便「火球男」查普曼提早打卡上班，麥登的如意算盤仍破功，吉拉斯皮3壘打、布蘭登克勞福敲安反超比數。
「即使我們處於落後，不代表我們出局了。我們一息尚存，拚戰依舊。」擊出再見安的潘尼克說，「沉著應戰是我們的共識，因為我們打過季後賽。」
9局上小熊布萊嚴左外野追平2分炮，讓戰局回到原點，但13局下巨人隊沒再浪費得點圈機會，潘尼克掃出深遠再見打，終止5小時4分惡鬥，將戰線延長至第4戰。
前6年都在偶數年2010、2012、2014封王，巨人隊不是沒有0比2劣勢後倒趕3場的經驗，2012年紅人隊就是魂斷於此，貝爾特說，「這存在我們的基因裡，我們從不覺得自己沒有機會。」
另一頭國民與道奇第3戰，道奇日籍投手前田健太，季後賽先發首秀僅投3局挨5安、失4分提前退場，國民8比3取得聽牌優勢，再1勝挺進國聯冠軍戰。
